Every year I try to raise money for charity doing different things throughout the year and more often than not the charities I support are related to research for cancer. Cancer is cruel, it affects 1 in 2 of us now and I hope that one day there will be a cure, if that’s in my lifetime even better. Until then, I’d like to raise as much money as I can to support the hard work and research that will bring that day closer.
This year I’ve decided to support Children With Cancer UK. I’m at a point in my life where I realise that the children of today are the generation of tomorrow and although I don’t have any children of my own I believe we should cherish them all and give them the support the need to make the best of of their lives. Cancer in children is even more cruel. No parent or child should ever have to face this. Let’s make a change and raise funds to help cure cancers in children and give more young people the opportunities that we as adults take for granted.
I’m also going to support Mind, the mental health charity. Every day I deal with bereaved families at work and so often it’s as a result of suicide. Now I’m not saying that everyone who has a mental health problem will end up feeling suicidal, not at all, but sadly there are far too many lives ended this way through depression. One in four of us will be affected by a mental health problem every year, and thousands more are still struggling. Mind provides advice and support to those affected by mental health problems and will never give up on those in need.
The first challenge I’ve set for myself is ‘Dry January’. Throughout December I’ve probably drank more prosecco than I have water and I’m really feeling it now. I’m tired and really feeling ready for a fresh start in January. However, I often struggle with staying power and I’ve attempted to do Dry January or Stoptober twice before and failed both times! I realise I’m painting myself into something of an alcoholic here and that’s not the case at all but I do enjoy a drink at the weekend and occasionally after a hard day at work I do unwind with a glass of wine!
There will be other challenges throughout the year and I’ll alternate the charities that I support as the year progresses. Will you be taking part in any charity challenges this year? I’d love to hear all about your efforts and achievements.
