When I first started running a few years ago I didn’t care how far or fast I was going but it wasn’t long before the ‘PB’ bug caught hold of me and every time I ran I enjoyed keeping track of my times with technology.
For my birthday a couple of years ago some family and friends chipped in to buy me my first ever sports watch; a Garmin Forerunner 220. I loved it. I wore it every time I ran, until I injured my knee only a short 4 months later.
Needless to say, the Garmin sat in the draw gathering dust for a long time. I had no way of beating those PB’s I’d achieved and I went on to home workouts, doing HIIT, Kettlebells and Bodypump.
Then came along the triathlon training (I know I keep going on about it)! With a Sprint Distance triathlon as my main focus, I only need to run 5 km which is becoming more and possible after my knee surgery. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do the half marathon I dreamed of but doing a triathlon means I get a decent physical challenge with only a short run!
So with the Garmin redundant I’d been using my Fitbit Charge 2, enjoying step competitions with fellow Fitbit-ers. I can use it for running and cycling too, as it has GPS and records distance, time and splits; but I can’t use it for swimming.
Off I went in search of the perfect triathlon sports watch that didn’t cost the earth, and I decided on the Tom Tom Runner 3. It tracks cycling both indoor and out. Running both on the road and treadmill, freestyle, gym workouts and…. swimming!
Keeping a track of my swim times was the most difficult thing before I got this new watch. I had no idea how long it was taking to swim a length, and no idea how far away from my target I was. In my head I thought it was taking about 20 minutes to complete the 500m distance. To my surprise though, last night it took me 15.:38! The watch told me that my fastest length was 23 seconds, average stroke count was 18 and my swolf score was 47. I have no idea what swolf is.., but after a bit of goggling I believe it’s something to do with efficiency?? Finally, I have some numbers to focus on!
The watch is so easy to use, I’ve used it once for brick training too. I did a 15 km cycle followed by a 2.5 km run and it worked brilliantly, I’m looking forward to playing with my new toy more and getting to understand it’s features. Although it doesn’t allow you to have ‘friends’ on the TomTom it does link up to several apps, so you can share your achievements with your friends through Map My Run, Strava and My Fitness Pal.
Needless to say, the Garmin went to a loving new home via eBay but my Fitbit Charge 2 is still my everyday watch! I prefer it to the TomTom Runner as it’s smaller, discreet, and it reads my text messages to me! Not forgetting those all important step challenges that I’m getting better at!
